Don’t you ever just want to leave it all behind? You know, leave your home in the suburbs and your family and your responsibilities and instead dance around a fire with a group of liberated women in the woods? Carrie Coon—or at least her character in The Liberation—does. Bleecker Street released the first trailer for the film today, which comes from director Guy Nattiv, an Oscar winner in 2019 for his short film Skin in 2019.

An official synopsis for The Liberation reads:

Rita (Carrie Coon), a woman in midlife haunted by the weight of her past, encounters magnetic young spiritual leader Ricki (Lily James) and leaves her family to follow her to an all-female commune. But when her daughters Ella (Bella Ramsey) and Jo (Odessa Young) arrive unexpectedly and become drawn into the group’s seductive world, Rita is forced to choose between the family she left behind and the life she believes can save her.

The Liberation previously played at the Toronto International Film Festival and Telluride earlier this year, where it received mostly positive reviews. It hits theaters on January 8, indicating that it won’t be an awards contender for early 2027, but may be a good opportunity to liberate us from those cinematic doldrums.
