Michael Douglas thinks Cher's Oscar should have gone to Glenn Close

Yo Cher, Michael Douglas is really happy for you and this may have finished nearly 40 years ago, but Glenn Close had one of the best performances of all time. We’re paraphrasing here, but this is essentially what Douglas said on a recent appearance on The Graham Norton Show, where he reunited with his Fatal Attraction co-star. Close mentioned how she was set to receive an honorary Academy Award this year, and quipped that “they probably don’t want to feel guilty anymore.” Of course, Close has received eight competitive Oscar nominations over the years, but has never won any of them. On the couch next to her, Douglas interjects to say that Close “should have won with Fatal Attraction,” which was her fourth nomination and her first in the Leading Actress category. Cher won for Moonstruck instead, Douglas reminds, to which Norton responds “Oh, wow.” Says Douglas: “I know, that’s what we all said… Glenn gave one of the greatest performances of all time.”

It’s true that of the roles that have earned Close nominations, Alex Forrest is certainly among the most iconic. But Cher’s performance in Moonstruck is also incredibly beloved and there certainly have to be other awards Close has lost out on that haven’t embedded themselves in pop culture to quite this extent. Did Meryl Streep really need a third Oscar for playing Margaret Thatcher, or could it have gone to Close’s Albert Nobbs? Could she have taken home a Supporting Actress trophy in 1984 over Peggy Ashcroft in A Passage To India? Or what if she had won in 2021 for her performance Mamaw Vance in Hillbilly Elegy? Actually, let’s not even joke about that.
