It’s door city over here in the teaser for The Rehearsal season two. (This author wrote the headline of this article as a rehearsal for that first sentence.) Who knew that a show that started with a simple lie to a trivia team would blossom into one of the wackiest and most thought-provoking experiments on television in years. The Rehearsal season one saw Nathan Fielder use a seemingly unlimited HBO budget to go full Synecdoche, New York in an attempt to help people “rehearse” life moments in a completely controlled environment. The show became harder to summarize over time, as, like the movie it took so much of its visual language from, it completely broke containment and veered into major ethical questions about life, art, and the boundary between the two.

Now the Nathan For You mastermind is doing it all over again. Perhaps season one was just one big rehearsal for season two—we really don’t know. HBO’s summary of the new season is expectedly vague. “In season two, the urgency of Fielder’s project grows as he decides to put his resources toward an issue that affects us all,” it reads. The season’s new teaser doesn’t feel all that urgent, as a camera slowly pans across a row of identically constructed soundstage apartments, each hosting their own presumably fake couple dressed in identical clothes. (And yes, each tiny apartment has at least two doors.) Once again donning his laptop harness from season one, Fielder paces in front, keeping watch over the whole thing. And that’s it! Seems like they hadn’t rehearsed the dialogue part yet.

The Rehearsal returns April 20 on HBO. But if you want to plan out exactly where to sit and prep your emotional response in advance, you can tell your friends it actually premieres April 21.
