If there’s one thing The Weeknd is good at, it’s attracting top-tier talent for his Hollywood projects. The Idol may have had flaws, but casting wasn’t one of them—he appeared alongside some of the industry’s biggest up-and-coming names, including Lily-Rose Depp, Rachel Sennott, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (at the time, on the cusp of her Oscar win). Similarly, his upcoming film features some of the biggest names in young Hollywood, Sabrina Carpenter’s video vixens Barry Keoghan and Jenna Ortega. Now, fresh off Abel Tesfaye’s triumphant return to the Grammys stage, we’ve got a Hurry Up Tomorrow first look and some new details.
According to a synopsis from Lionsgate, the Hurry Up Tomorrow film follows “A musician plagued by insomnia” who “is pulled into an odyssey with a stranger who begins to unravel the very core of his existence.” In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Trey Edward Shults describes Tesfaye’s character as an artist “on the verge of a mental breakdown.” In terms of genre, “It’s a mix of psychological thriller and drama,” Shults says. “I honestly feel like I’ve never seen a movie quite like it.”
