Thunderbolts* ushers in summer season at the top of the weekend box office

Box office prognosticators are forecasting a great May at the movies.

Thunderbolts* ushers in summer season at the top of the weekend box office

The box office summer season has officially begun, and it’s no surprise to see a Marvel movie coming out on top: Thunderbolts* debuted at number one this past weekend with a solid $76 million take. Box office prognosticators are optimistic about the movie’s long-term prospects amid favorable reviews. But it should be noted that’s even less than the debut for critically panned Captain America: Brave New World ($89 million) and way less than the debut of A Minecraft Movie ($157 million, and making a strong case that video game films are replacing superhero films in the IP wars). Still, it’s not a bad showing for a group of random MCU rejects brought together on the most ragtag team since Guardians Of The Galaxy. 

Thunderbolts* was the only major new release for the weekend, but the holdovers are holding strong. Record-breaker Sinners comes in at number two with $33 million, bringing its earnings to $181 million domestically and $57 million internationally for a dazzling total of $236 million worldwide. A Minecraft Movie sits comfortably at number three after a month in theaters, bringing in $13.7 million over the weekend to boost its worldwide total to $873.4 million. Other films on the board include The Accountant 2, Until Dawn, Warfare, and Indian action thriller HIT: The Third Case. 

According to Variety, overall domestic revenues are still 31 percent behind 2019, but up 15.8 from 2024. Senior Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian tells the outlet that “May is shaping up to be one of the best on record.” This month will also see the release of Final Destination: Bloodlines, Karate Kid: Legends, Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning, and the live action Lilo & Stitch, so expectations are high.
