We were a bit underwhelmed by the first teaser trailer for Macon Blair’s upcoming Toxic Avenger movie, mostly because it had almost zero Toxie in it. (A lot of tonal riffs, violence, and swearing, but very little Peter Dinklage killing dudes with a mop.) The same cannot be said for the new trailer for Blair’s film, which puts Dinklage front and center, in both his mutant, and pre-mutant forms, looking sad and ripping off arms. It’s better!
It also gives a better glimpse at the satirical heart of the thing, for those of us who weren’t lucky enough to catch the film when it made the festival rounds a few years back. (It’s since been picked up by Cineverse, and is aiming at an August release date.) Winston Gooze (Dinklage) is sick, see, and has no way to get access to the medicine that might keep him alive. (Especially after he brings his problem to his company’s owner, played by a Full Scuzzball Kevin Bacon, who laughs him off and then fires him.) We’re not entirely sure how those events progress from “Very sad man seemingly trapped in the world’s darkest Tim And Eric sketch” to “green mutant guy who seems to kill a lot of people,” but as a baseline for the movie’s tone, it works a lot better than the earlier effort. (For one thing, Dinklage is so effortlessly good that he makes the deliberate gonzo reality of the movie feel just real enough to tolerate.)
Co-starring Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige, and Elijah Woods (whose very weird-looking villain character we’re still excited to see in action), The Toxic Avenger lands in theaters on August 29.
