Trailer for Jem And The Holograms looks fairly outrageous
Jem, the classic ‘80s cartoon, was about a woman named Jerrica Benton who managed a record label called Starlight Music. When her father died, he left her a high-tech computer called Synergy that could project holographic images onto things, and Jerrica used it to transform herself into a popstar named Jem. As Jem, she formed a band with her sisters called The Holograms, and together they’d have fun, play concerts, and occasionally get into physical fights with rival bands. Obviously, most of that doesn’t make any sense, but that didn’t stop Transformers or G.I. Joe.
Going off of this trailer for the Jem And The Holograms movie, the big-screen version of Jerrica Benton is dropping almost all of that. Jem is still there, as are The Holograms, but we didn’t see any actual holograms, computers named Synergy, or even fistfights with rival bands. What it does have, though, is a One Direction song, an obvious message about being yourself, a cameo from Ryan Hansen, and Juliette Lewis playing a character who may or may not be Satan. Seriously, that scene where she’s standing over Jem’s shoulder? Chilling.
Jem And The Holograms stars Aubrey Peeples, Hayley Kiyoko, Stefanie Scott, and Molly Ringwald. It’ll be in theaters in December.
