Trailer for Netflix’s Five Came Back examines WWII from a filmmaker’s perspective
Tonight of all nights, with Donald Trump set to make what will surely be another horrifying speech that completely betrays the principles that America was built on, it’s probably worth looking back on the World War II era to see how our nation handled that similarly unsettling threat to our very existence. That’s not necessarily the goal of Netflix’s documentary series Five Came Back, but it’s hard not to think of the present day when this trailer opens on clips from Adolf Hitler’s speeches. The series is actually about five filmmakers—Frank Capra, John Ford, John Huston, George Stevens, and William Wyler—and how World War II impacted their films while their films were simultaneously impacting the world, and it features interviews with Steven Spielberg, Francis Ford Coppola, Guillermo Del Toro, Paul Greengrass, and Lawrence Kasdan. The series is also being narrated by Meryl Streep, which is another fun tie to modern politics.
Five Came Back will premiere on Netflix on March 31, and you can see a poster for it below.
