Stampede Productions can fly, again, sucker. After a decade-long absence from the Tremors franchise, Stampede Productions, has found the ass end of the rights to their underground, human-eating worms series. In a blog post earlier today, Stampede announced it “reclaimed the rights to the original script for Tremors.” The production company behind the first four Tremors movies, Stampede, includes director Ron Underwood, writers S.S. Wilson and Brent Maddock, and producer, agent, and writer Nancy Roberts.

In the blog post, the collective members of Stampede laid out a couple of promises for whatever comes next for Tremors. The company isn’t “reading outside ideas” and is considering a “return-to-Perfection sequel,” referring to 2001’s Tremors 3: Back To Perfection. But if that doesn’t work, they’re considering “one or two more outlandish ideas featuring graboids in a new setting.” However, it will not be a remake of the first movie with a new cast, nor “will it be a version of our original script for Tremors 5 (a question that is frequently sent to the Stampede FAQ).” Finally, and, perhaps, most importantly, they are considering folding Kevin Bacon’s character, Val, back into the series, but “no promises.”

There are some caveats regarding how much the team owns, though. They can’t license anything from the first movie, whether a Graboid t-shirt or anything with the Tremors logo. Nevertheless, Stampede struck a deal with Christian Francis to write a novelization, and there’s something so very Tremors about ensuring the novelization rights were locked down before anything else.

Stampede exited the Tremors universe in 2014 after failing to strike a deal with Universal on Tremors 4. They explained in a 2015 post:

Early in 2014, Universal Home Video indicated that they were budgeting another sequel based on a 2004 script written by Brent Maddock and S. S. Wilson. While they pointed out that they had “no further contractual obligation” to Stampede, they did offer us Executive Producer positions. But they also made it clear that in this new even-lower budget project, the Stampede’ partners’ participation would be severely restricted, with little control over cast, director, special effects, locations, or indeed any aspect of production.

Universal released three more, low-budget, direct-to-DVD Tremors movies between 2015 and 2020. The latest, Tremors: Shrieker Island, starred series stalwart Michael Gross and, you guessed, Jon Heder.
