Channing Tatum has worked exceptionally hard to go from being a guy who takes his shirt off for money to being a guy who takes his shirt of for money but there are also cameras around, and maybe he’s supposed to look sad sometimes. But although this past weekend’s box-office domination of The Vow and the promising-looking trailer for 21 Jump Street—not to mention dramas like Stop-Loss or A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints—suggest that Tatum has done well to diversify beyond just being a guy who holds a gun or punches people when someone like Mark Wahlberg isn’t available, or maybe does wicked backflips to hip-hop music to stop gang violence (or whatever), choosing what artistic directions to explore with one’s gifts is hard and stuff.
That’s why Tatum is now considering leaving those sorts of decisions up to you, the viewer: He told the L.A. Times that he’d like to use his Twitter and Facebook pages to pose questions such as, “Guys, what do you want me to do? Option A or Option B? And people can vote and then I can go do that. Then I can get notes on what we did right and wrong.” It’s like a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure story, except your adventure has to star Channing Tatum.
And while Tatum hasn’t yet implemented this new, interactive phase of his career, despite years of the Internet giving him notes on what he did right and wrong already, Tatum believes this is truly the next logical phase in the evolution of filmmaking. “Studios—rightfully so because that's the system—try to manipulate [people] into wanting something they might not want,” he says. “I don't think that's the right way to go about it. I want to straight up ask them: Should I make a comedy? An action movie? A love story?”
Indeed, those are three reasonable options for Channing Tatum movies, all of which he has attempted to varying degrees of success. But obviously there are vast possibilities for the things we, the Internet, could put Channing Tatum in by collective decree—so here’s your chance.
