Look, the people who make the trailers for The Walking Dead spin-off Dead City know exactly what people are clamoring for, and they’re happy to provide it: Shots of an eerie New York only fitfully lit up with neon electric light, Jeffrey Dean Morgan giving big speeches to rapt crowds of guys looking like Mad Max rejects, and a lot of shots of his character Negan’s big, scary baseball bat. (Now with extra sparks!) And so it is in the new trailer for the show’s second season, which pays some very brief lip service to the issue of all the zombies still wandering Manhattan, but which is, as ever, more concerned with the still-human monsters running around and making trouble.

Along the way, we also spend plenty of time with Morgan’s co-star Lauren Cohan, who even gets to hold the bat for a bit. (Also, her character, Negan’s eternal frenemy Maggie, spends a lot more time with her kidnapped son Hershel, played by Logan Kim.) The trailer suggests that, if nothing else, Dead City will continue to be a character actor’s delight, with Lisa Emery, Željko Ivanek, and newcomer Kim Coates all chewing different flavors of scenery as “The Dama” (Emery) tries to get Negan to serve as her new general/enforcer in her efforts to keep New York City lawless and wild, and he delivers some tautological platitudes about “power being power.” The upshot of it all is that Maggie and Negan now find themselves once again on opposite sides, albeit with the minor twist that she’s now slightly less obsessed with killing him than she used to be.

Dead City returns for its second season on Sunday, May 4, at 9 p.m. Eastern on AMC and AMC+.
