Watch the crazy-ass trailer for Velvet Buzzsaw, Jake Gyllenhaal's new film with Nightcrawler's Dan Gilroy
Jake Gyllenhaal delivered what’s probably the best performance of his career in 2014's Nightcrawler, in which he transformed into a lank, bug-eyed paparazzi parasite. Gyllenhaal’s playing an entirely different character in Velvet Buzzsaw, his new collaboration with Nightcrawler director Dan Gilroy, but, per the below trailer, he looks to be just as unhinged.
Gyllenhaal stars as hifalutin art critic Morf Vandewalt, who finds himself thrust into a living nightmare after the “mesmeric” paintings of a dead artist begin coming to life and slaughtering those in his orbit. It looks extremely silly, especially once a legion of fuzzy monkey arms tear through one painting, but also alive with the kind of infectious, dangerous energy that made Nightcrawler so good.
Nightcrawler’s Rene Russo co-stars with Gyllenhaal, and the supporting cast includes Toni Collette, John Malkovich, Daveed Diggs, and Stranger Things’ Natalia Dyer.
Velvet Buzzsaw, a Netflix production, hits the streaming platform on February 1. Watch the trailer below.
