Inside Out 2 is officially one of the most successful animated films ever at the box office

The emotional Pixar sequel crossed the $1 billion threshold internationally this weekend

We’ve got some good news and some bad news this morning. The good news is that Inside Out 2 is actually pretty delightful—at least by current Pixar standards—and the sequel is being rewarded for the joy it’s bringing at the box office. Inside Out easily led the domestic box office for its third weekend in a row, raking in an additional $57 million in just this stretch. That brings the film up to $469 million domestically and the coveted $1 billion mark internationally. It’s not just the most successful release of 2024 (sorry, Timothée); it’s also the fastest animated release to ever hit that threshold (per Variety) and only the 11th to do so.

The bad news, of course, is that Pixar is most likely going to learn all the wrong lessons from this. More thoughtful, funny storytelling that appeals to teens and parents alike? Of course not! More sequels and threequels that people will buy tickets to more out of habit than any actual desire to see the films? Hell yeah!

Of course, it’s not just Pixar that’s betting on pre-established tentpoles right now; for better or worse, it’s a strategy that clearly works. A Quiet Place: Day One, the new prequel to John Krasinski’s muted horror franchise, entered the race at number two this week, with a total of $53 million domestically. It’s followed by a bad day at the ranch for Kevin Costner’s long-awaited Horizon: An American Saga—Chapter 1, which cost an estimated $130 million to make but only lassoed $11 million in its opening weekend. Just off the podium are Bad Boys: Ride Or Die in fourth place with $10 million, and Indian film Kalki 2898 AD in fifth with $5 million.
