Practical Magic 2 finally knocks Spider-Man from top of the box office

Still, the Nicole Kidman, Sandra Bullock-led film only grossed $30 million in the United States.

Practical Magic 2 finally knocks Spider-Man from top of the box office

After six weeks at the top of the box office, a coven was finally able to knock Spider-Man: Brand New Day down to spot number two. Practical Magic 2 opened to $30 million in the United States. However, despite finishing in first place, this is not an especially great result for the film. As Variety points out, this figure is roughly comparable to the opening of the original 1998 film, which was long considered a flop before becoming reclaimed as a cult favorite. When including its foreign grosses, Practical Magic 2 grossed about $46 million, which is still but a dent in the $75 million pre-marketing budget for the film.

Even so, Practical Magic 2 still had the best weekend of any of the new releases by a wide margin, both in overall gross and in its per-theater average. The Owen Wilson and Alan Ritchson-led Runner opened behind both Brand New Day and The Odyssey at number four, bringing in just $6.4 million in its opening weekend. Further down was South Korean production Hope, which opened to $3.3 million across 1,560 theaters, the most limited opening of the weekend. Directly behind it was The Uprising, which grossed $3.25 million that will hopefully be redistributed to the poor. Take a look at the whole top ten below, courtesy of Box Office Mojo
