Weekend Box Office: Reports of 3-D's death greatly exaggerated
Bad reviews. Reports about the cruddiness of its 2-D to 3-D conversion. Speculation about audience revolt in the face of rising, gratuitous 3-D surcharges. If any of these things were supposed to torpedo the chintzy CGI remake of 1981’s Clash Of The Titans, they failed utterly to do so. Repeat business may be a challenge, but $61.4 million made for a strong first weekend, more than double any other contender. But the big winner of the weekend—indeed, the big winner, in terms of profit, of any weekend he burps out a movie—was Tyler Perry’s sequel Why Did I Get Married Too?, which collected $30.1 million for second place on a total shooting budget that was only two-thirds that amount. Also faring better than you think: the Miley Cyrus/Nicholas Sparks weepie The Last Song, which rode a Wednesday open to a $16.2 million, fourth-place weekend; factoring in fairly robust Spring Break business for the two extra days, its total gross is $25.6 million so far, a fine number given the low production costs. The jury’s still out on whether Cyrus can transition out of her Hannah Montana base, however; it’s unlikely anyone beyond her core preteen devotees would be interested in seeing crapfests like this one.
Not much action in limited circles this weekend, with The Greatest floundering at $4,625 per screen despite a big-name cast (Carey Mulligan, Pierce Brosnan, Susan Sarandon), and the Michel Gondry home movie The Thorn In The Heart doing exceedingly modest business ($6,100) on one screen. In brighter news, Music Box Films seems to have another Tell No One-level hit on their hands with the Swedish thriller The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, which has made $1.47 million so far and is showing no signs of slowing down.
