What does the camera see? What truths do its lenses capture? How does life unfold at 24 frames a second? Most importantly, how come Unicron hasn’t been in a Transformers movie yet? Some of these questions and, maybe, even more questions, will be on the table for Philomena Cunk’s upcoming deep dive into the verite of cinema in her new mockumentary, Cunk On Cinema.
Just as the Minions wrote their love letter to the movies with the help of Goomi in Universal’s box-office smash, Minions & Monsters, Philomena Cunk is turning her inquisitive eyes toward Tinsel Town and beyond. The upcoming three-part miniseries, which, we should note, is not affiliated with Tim Heidecker and Gregg Turkington’s fellow movie-head-centric On Cinema series, tells the story of film, from the invention of the camera to the French New Wave, the introduction of CGI creations, and what lies ahead, with AI being the inevitable future of all entertainment. Per Variety, the new series will feature interviews with Michael Bay, Benedict Cumberbatch, composer Daniel Pemperton, Die Hard scribe Steven E. de Souza, critic Mark Kermode, Story Of Film author Mark Cousins, Sight And Sound editor Isabel Stevens, Avengers DP Seamus McGarvey, and more. If anyone can figure out when audiences will tire of Spider-Man movies, it’s Cunk.
The beloved mockumentarian Diane Morgan has been tightening England’s stranglehold over fake interviews since the mid-2010s, when she entered Alan Partridge and Borat’s arena on Charlie Brooker’s Weekly Wipe. Over the last decade, she’s carved out space for herself with Cunk on Britain and her Netflix debut Cunk On Earth. The BBC and Netflix will continue to share Cunk custody with Cunk On Cinema, though no release date has been announced.
