Surely, some movie will stop Spider-Man: Brand New Day from dominating the box office one of these weekends, but it hasn’t happened yet. In its fourth outing, Spidey won again, and it wasn’t even particularly close. The Tom Holland-led superhero flick brought in another $39 million in the United States, besting Insidious: Out Of The Furhter—another Sony release—by nearly $14 million. The latest Insidious movie brought in $25.3 million in the States and another $35 million abroad. All in all, a very respectable haul for a film of an estimated $18 million budget.
In third place was another movie that opened a while ago. The Odyssey added another $19.5 million to its domestic haul. Last week, the Christopher Nolan-directed movie became the highest-grossing R-rated release ever, and clearly audiences are still lining up for a peek inside this beautiful horse statue that showed up just outside the gates of our fair city.
Other than Insidious, there wasn’t much good news to be found for the weekend’s other new releases. The next highest-grossing release was Mutiny, which opened to just $7.5 million. Worse still was Spa Weekend, which opened to slightly over $3 million, earning the lowest per-theater average of any film in the weekend’s top ten.
