The box office fumbled over Super Bowl weekend

The Philadelphia Eagles may have flown to victory last night, but there were no real wins at the movies this weekend.

The box office fumbled over Super Bowl weekend

Seems like America chose the Kendrick Lamar show over the movies this weekend. The box office only brought in $53 million across all titles. That’s “slower than expected” per Deadline‘s analysis, even for a weekend in which American audiences are usually too busy snacking on wings and watching weird commercials to see any of the movies those commercials are for. (Fun fact: Miley Cyrus remains the real Super Bowl champion, as Hannah Montana And Miley Cyrus: The Best Of Both Worlds Concerts retains its title of “biggest Super Bowl weekend opening ever” for a 17th straight year. The Disney special made $31.1 million back in 2008.)

The weekend’s meager victor was Dog Man with $14 million, a 62% drop from its opening last week. Every other film did about as well as the Kansas City Chiefs last night. There was no love for either of the weekend’s two Valentine’s Day hopefuls, holiday slasher Heart Eyes or Ke Huy Quan-led action comedy Love Hurts. The former brought in $9 million and the latter a mere $6 million. That rounds out this week’s podium, with every other title in the top 10 falling somewhere below the $4 million mark. Hopefully there will be some more love in the air (or just less distraction) next weekend. For now, here’s this week’s top 10, courtesy of Box Office Mojo:

  1. Dog Man, $13,700,350
  2. Heart Eyes, $8,500,000
  3. Love Hurts, $5,800,000
  4. Mufasa: The Lion King, $3,924,000
  5. Companion, $3,020,000
  6. One of Them Days, $3,000,000
  7. Becoming Led Zeppelin, $2,626,947
  8. Flight Risk, $2,600,000
  9. Sonic the Hedgehog 3, $1,750,000
  10. Moana 2, $1,544,000
