Weekend Box Office: The Yard, Stomped Again
Only in January could a poorly reviewed movie about a marginal dance craze win not one but two straight weekends at the box office. Though it was by no means a decisive victory, Stomp The Yard edged out the unstoppable Night At The Museum with a $13.3 million take. The consolation for the Ben Stiller family crapfest is that it surpassed the $200 million mark and appears capable of remaining in theaters until Summer '09. Despite being the week's only new release nationwide, The Hitcher opened in fourth with a relatively paltry $8.2 million; coupled with the tepid performance of Black Christmas a month ago, this could signal the blessed end of '70s and '80s horror remakes. (Woo-hoo!) Awards season gave a boost to several contenders that improved on their previous week's performances, including Dreamgirls, The Queen, and Pan's Labyrinth. The latter has been doing especially strong business with the highest per-screen-average at $7800 in 600 theaters.
