The MCU scored another victory at the box office this weekend—no asterisk. The New Avengers (née Thunderbolts*) flew to the number one spot for the second weekend in a row. While its $33 million pot was slightly lower than expected (according to Deadline, at least), the film’s 55% drop from its opening weekend ($74 million) is still a significantly better hold than Captain America: Brave New World, the MCU’s other offering this year, which fell 68% within the same timeframe. The film’s relatively good numbers may be the result of positive reviews, Yelena’s (Florence Pugh) refreshing lack of powers, or maybe even the changing title stunt. Whatever it is, the film is currently projected to soar past Cap’s $200.7 million total haul, with a little boost from the upcoming three-day weekend.
Sinners is also holding steady with $21 million despite the lack of IMAX screens. (It’s sold-out second IMAX run starts this Thursday.) It now sits at a total domestic box office of $214 million, officially cracking the list of top 20 highest-grossing North American R-rated releases of all time, according to Variety. (It had to beat Wedding Crashers, another film about uninvited party guests, to do it.) A Minecraft Movie is also hanging on the podium in the bronze medal spot, with The Accountant 2 falling just behind.
Lower down the list is a whole gauntlet of new releases. IFC’s Clown In A Cornfield landed at number five with $3.6 million, marking the biggest release in the indie distributor’s history. (Last year’s Late Night With The Devil came in at $2.8 million.) The very on-the-nose title was followed by two films that may have split the thriller crowd a bit. Kerry Washington’s Shadow Force landed at number six, followed by Josh Harnett plane thriller Fight Or Flight with a delayed take off at number seven.
