Just what sort of movie will the Weezer movie be? Fans have been piecing together clues—and some of them might even be part of the actual film. Fan club members were reportedly invited to a merchandise signing later this month and were asked to sign a release and an NDA. The April 21 event offered the “chance to say hello to the band and get something signed in an exclusive private setting – and hopefully be in the video to boot!” Meanwhile, earlier this month, another fan spotted a notice of filming in downtown LA that called for three days of shooting for a project called Weezer: Security Threat with listed filming activity including “simulated bullet effects,” “atmospheric smoke,” and more.
But that’s not all: on the band’s Voyage to the Blue Planet Tour (which took place in fall 2024), fans captured video of Ben Schwartz (Parks & Recreation, Sonic The Hedgehog) directing the gathered crowd. “Now, there’s a big fight where Weezer is fighting these big villains,” he explained. “And what’s going to happen now is they’re going to follow me, and I’m going to be fighting in different areas. And I’m going to say, ‘Someone throws a punch at someone from Weezer,’ and you’ll react to that. And then I say, ‘And Weezer kicks their butt!,’ and you react to that.”
Taken together, these clues point to some sort of hybrid, guerrilla-style, documentary-slash-scripted film not unlike the upcoming Pavement movie. Perhaps it’s a little more out there than Pavements if it depicts the band fighting “big villains.” Regardless, Weezer fans have something to look forward to (and perhaps a welcome distraction from the other time the band made headlines recently). Weezer has several upcoming shows and festival appearances throughout the summer; who knows, maybe if you attend, you’ll end up in the movie.
