Welcome to Horrors Week 2026

As Halloween approaches, The A.V. Club is celebrating all that goes bump in the night, be it on screen, stage, or the page.

Welcome to Horrors Week 2026

Boo! Did we get you? No, not yet? Well, hopefully in the next few days, we at The A.V. Club will be able to serve up something that spooks or startles. That’s right, it’s time for our annual Horrors Week. It’s been a banner year for the genre, with young filmmakers like Curry Barker and Kane Parsons emerging from social media to create some of the biggest hits of the year, with the genre only becoming more entrenched and popular across the small screen, the stage, and the page. This week, we’re going to talk about it all.

We’re kicking things off today with an Inventory from contributing writer Jarrod Jones tackling the best of a horror staple: The direct-to-video sequel. Tomorrow, film critic Monica Castillo will dive into Nicolas Cage’s singular history with horror, and on Wednesday, staff writer Matt Schimkowitz will take on the big-screen horror sequels. Later this week, we turn our eyes toward TV, with critic Saloni Gajjar investigating what makes a horror series really work on television, and TV editor Erik Adams taking on horror-comedies. We’ll also take a look at horror shows on stage, with a recent spate of plays like Paranormal Activity and Stranger Things attracting audiences the world over. There may even be a few other surprises along the way, so act like you’re in a haunted house and keep your eyes peeled. Happy Halloween!
