Welcome to What’s On, our weekly roundup of notable shows. Here is what’s happening on TV from Sunday, October 25 to Saturday, October 31. All times are Eastern.
Minimum Wage (Netflix, Monday, series premiere)
The era of 20-episode TV seasons seemed long behind us in this short-attention-span streaming age, but this new mockumentary sitcom is bringing the tradition back with 28 episodes for its first season (albeit with each installment clocking in around just 12 minutes). Adapted from the viral web shorts from American High, Minimum Wagecenters on the overworked teens—played by Aidan Micho, Hyde Healy, Julia Dicesare, Luke Burke, Ryan Micho, Tommy Armstrong, and emerging Saturday Night Live’s breakout Grace Reiter—struggling to manage a chaotic local pizzeria while saddled with low pay, a power-tripping manager played by Randall Park, service-industry burnout, and acadmeic demands. The first 14 eps arrive on Netflix on October 26, with the second batch to be released at a later date.
The Mob (Hulu, Monday, series premiere)
A group of celebs sussing out psychological strategy and shifting alliances in a grand European house, all while a campy, cult-favorite actor serves as your host? No, this isn’t The Traitors—this is The Mob, a new reality competition that trades a Scottish castle for an Italian villa, Alan Cumming for Parker Posey, and a variation on Werewolf for a less-than-subtle riff on the social-deduction game’s other name—contestants form crime families, elect a “don” to control the money, and potentially get “whacked” (a.k.a. eliminated) after movie-inspired challenges. Goodfellas’ Debi Mazar and The Sopranos’ Aida Turturro pit their fictional organized-crime experience against an assortment of reality TV regulars, including Bruno Tonioli, Chelsea Lazkani, Demi Engemann, Harry Jowsey, and Joe Gorga.
Nocturne (Apple TV, Friday, series premiere) Based on Alexander Ahndoril and Alexandra Coelho Ahndoril’s novels The Sandman and Lazarus, this crime thriller centers on ex-soldier and homicide detective Jonah Lynn (Liev Schreiber), whose quiet life in small-town Pennsylvania gets an unwelcome jolt when a victim of notorious serial killer Jurek Walter (Stephen Graham) turns up alive. Jonah is pulled back into the hunt for the one Walter victim still unaccounted for, which is made even more complicated when the detective sends his FBI agent protégée/surrogate daughter (Zazie Beetz) undercover as part of the investigation. Rory Culkin, Chrissy Metz, Poorna Jagannathan, and Bill Camp also star. Look for our review on Tuesday.
