Yes, there could be a Party Down movie, and they already have an opening scene in mind
You may have seen several entertainment news sites today posting updates from the Alamo Drafthouse’s Ultimate Party Down Marathon this past weekend, which reunited the full cast and creators of the cult cancelled show for a 10-hour consecutive viewing of the entire series. Most of those news reports, naturally, have honed in on Rob Thomas’ statements about a potential Party Down movie, which he teased was “pretty far down the deal-making process,” saying he seemed “hopeful” that it would close in time to shoot during the television hiatus of next spring. In case you missed it (and you probably did), our Austin site thoroughly recapped the event yesterday. Because we are lucky bastards, Austin city editor Erik Adams and I were there for the entire thing, and it was both awesome and kind of exhausting. Not for the cast, necessarily, as they spent most of their time next door at the Iron Cactus, drinking.
Anyway, there are a couple of additional tidbits of information that seem to have escaped those outside reports, so here they are: 1) Missing from the below video and all of the articles it spawned is the part where Thomas also cautioned that co-creator and writer John Enbom will be pretty busy with his upcoming NBC series Free Agents, which could conflict with doing the movie. “If you want a Party Down movie, hope for Free Agents to fail,” Thomas said. He was joking, but also not really. And 2) Should there actually be a Party Down movie, Thomas says he already has the opening scene planned—the actual “Are We Having Fun Yet?” beer commercial that becomes the bane of Adam Scott’s character’s existence, the inclusion of which Thomas and Enbom believes will serve to catch up audiences who may not be familiar with the show. We just thought you’d like to know.
