Martians, Trojans, and Larry Flynt lead August's Blu-ray and 4K releases

In honor of the 30th anniversary of the Topps trading card-based sci-fi, Mars Attacks! is getting a nice little restoration from Warner Bros. For a certain crowd, this star-studded oddball Tim Burton film is a perfectly odd encapsulation of the filmmaker’s humor: unapologetically goofy, a little mean, and entrenched in an older era of cinema. Extremely silly, this anti-human throwback is one long joke—and it’s a nice reminder of when Burton had some leeway to just screw around on the big screen with his personal interests.

Troy 4K

By this point, you might be all Odysseyed out. But maybe you’d be interested in going back just a bit further into Homer’s oeuvre? Wolfgang Petersen’s epic is massive, gorgeous, and undeniably flawed, but this Arrow release also includes the director’s cut, so at least there’s two versions of this Iliad adaptation to mull over. A big booklet and lots of archival featurettes bolster the dueling restorations, which will both serve as fascinating counterpoints to the recent Christopher Nolan film and to the future work of screenwriter David Benioff.

Gator Bait Collection 4K

A sleazy double feature from Terror Vision, Gator Bait and Gator Bait II: Cajun Justice recall a very specific kind of exploitation movie, finally putting these curios on disc for those of us who love this nasty kind of thing. (For an example of its obscurity, the final reel of the Gator Bait II print remains missing, with the restoration relying on the Laserdisc for that last bit.) With tons of interviews, commentary tracks, and a new set of subtitles, these swampy, bloody movies are getting a lot of respect from this release, which is always a treat for films that don’t necessarily seem to deserve the attention.

Harlan County, U.S.A. 4K

Barbara Kopple entrenched herself with striking miners for her debut 1973 documentary Harlan County, U.S.A., and she found attempted murder, solidarity, and song. The explosive film put Kopple on the map, put the struggle of these coal workers front-and-center, and helped change ground-level documentary filmmaking. Making this year-long fight all the more visceral is a 4K restoration, making-of doc, audio commentary from Kopple and her editor Nancy Baker, as well as a few interviews from folks affected by the film.

Italo-Crime Collection 4K

A three-film collection from Kino Lorber—including The Counselor, Blazing Magnum, and Weapons Of Death—the Italo-Crime Collection is an odd but admirable ’70s grouping of hard-boiled dubbed thrillers. More context for each is given by the series of new audio commentaries included on the release, as film historians walk you through the violent cops-and-mobsters movies. Expect big guns, big hair, and big commitments to codes of honor (that, of course, will be broken by the film’s end).

Little Odessa 4K

The grim debut from filmmaker James Gray, Little Odessa earned the director the Silver Lion from the Venice Film Festival when he was just 25. From there, Gray’s contemplative takes on crime films have spread to other genres, but they’ve maintained the tragic atmosphere of his first movie. Starring Tim Roth and Vanessa Redgrave, the noirish assassin story/family drama set a tone for the rest of Gray’s filmography, and he discusses his first feature in a new interview included on the disc conducted by Sean Fennessey.
