Jimmy Fallon and Jamie Lee Curtis almost as creepy the real You Can See Everything trailer

Host and guest parodied Nathan Fielder and Elizabeth Homes' stare-down for The Tonight Show cold open on Wednesday.

Jimmy Fallon and Jamie Lee Curtis almost as creepy the real You Can See Everything trailer

The teaser trailer for Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim’s documentary You Can See Everything is a masterpiece of indefinable tension. After all, it’s just Fielder and subject Elizabeth Holmes talking, right? But the subdued tones, subtly escalating music drone, and the duo’s unwavering eye contact as Fielder repeatedly asks the convicted fraudster if she’s lying to him all combine to make the A24 film seem like it’s about to shift to an explosion of mayhem at any second.

Parodies of the singularly eerie interaction are popping up everywhere, with Kate McKinnon and Seth Meyers having done an impromptu face-off on Late Night With Seth Meyers last month. And nobody’s saying that The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon swiped that idea for Wednesday’s cold open, but since Meyers, McKinnon, and Fallon are all pals, the two shows film in the same building, and Fallon never met a topical bit he didn’t like, it’s not hard to see how he got guest Jamie Lee Curtis to sit for their own mock interview segment.

In the cold open, Fallon’s makeup and hair people have done stellar work recreating filmmaker Fielder’s swoopy temples and dark pallor, while Curtis, her unblinking eyes popping through caked-on blush evokes a more What Ever Happened To Baby Jane? vibe as the mesmerizing Theronos founder. The joke stems from the dutiful slog of celebrities on late-night shows to promote their latest project, as Fallon warily asks if Curtis is only guesting to promote her new NBC sitcom Newlyweds or if she really wants to be on the show.

“Of course I do,” the frozen-faced Curtis murmurs, “I love talking to you.” (Even the intense Fallon seems unconvinced when she adds, “I’m engaging with you as a human being.”) Unlike the laser-focused Holmes, however, Fallon’s departure allows Curtis to finally break character, dropping her mask to admit that she thinks the Tonight Show host is an asshole.
