The ratings aren't looking great for Bari Weiss' newfangled 60 Minutes

Bad news continues to plague CBS’s 60 Minutes, with early Nielsen data showing a ratings drop for the troubled news program. This is from TheWrap, which reports that its Sunday night premiere, despite boasting hot new conservative correspondent Ross Douthat, drew 7.7 million viewers to the network, a 19% drop from last season’s premiere. TheWrap notes that these early numbers are expected to be updated at 4 pm Eastern time on Tuesday, but that the current data shows 1.5 million viewers among its core demographic of adults 25-54, a “33% year-over-year decline.” No doubt the president took time out of his schedule to watch the premiere, as the White House posted its approval of an item 60 Minutes ran on Sunday about the rescue of “Dude 44 Bravo,” the Air Force officer rescued after he was forced to eject in Iranian territory, and isn’t that polite?

The preliminary 7.7 million viewership for Sunday night’s premiere, compared with last year’s 10.3 million, is not the kind of ratings news parent company Paramount Skydance was hoping for when CEO David Ellison appointed Bari Weiss as CBS News editor-in-chief in 2025. Writing for Status in August 2026, Oliver Darcy reported that Paramount executives would be “extremely fixated” on comparing these post-Weiss ratings with the news magazine’s previous performance. “It’s 10.03M or bust,” a “veteran television news executive” said in the Status piece. “If they fall short, they’re cooked.” As to whether Paramount prefers its Weiss (and 60 Minutes executive producer Nick Bilton) served poached or fricasseed couldn’t be obtained as of press time.
