Colin Farrell and Margot Robbie embark on a romantasy adventure in A Big Bold Beautiful Journey trailer

For instance: a rogue GPS that instructs David (Farrell) to pick up Sarah (Robbie) or a strange doorway in the woods that takes them back in time. “What if you could open a doorway and walk through it to re-live a defining moment from your past?” the synopsis proposes. “Sarah and David are single strangers who meet at a mutual friend’s wedding and soon, through a surprising twist of fate, find themselves on A Big Bold Beautiful Journey – a funny, fantastical, sweeping adventure together where they get to re-live important moments from their respective pasts, illuminating how they got to where they are in the present…and possibly getting a chance to alter their futures.”

Helmed by Farrell’s After Yang director Kogonada, the A Big Bold Beautiful Journey trailer treads a tricky line between being a grounded adult romance and a magical fantasy. Speaking with Vanity Fair, Kogonada compared the tone to Hayao Miyazaki films  (“That sort of magical lightness really connects you to our everyday experiences and all the challenges of being human, and is able to do both things at once”) as well as The Truman Show. “I think about a movie like that: exploring so many levels, but really inviting and enjoyable,” he said. “The dream, if you’re going to make a film like this, is to thread the needle—to do something that has artistic integrity but invites everyone to the table.”

A Big Bold Beautiful Journey also features Kevin Kline, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Lily Rabe, and Jodie Turner-Smith. The film premieres in theaters on September 19.
