First trailer for Andrew Haigh's latest sees a troubled family prepare for A Long Winter

Andrew Haigh (Weekend, 45 Years, All Of Us Strangers) makes exquisitely sad films about desire, loneliness, and the inexorable pull of the past on the present. The trailer for his latest film, the snowbound period piece A Long Winter, promises another such meditative, impeccably-acted experience as the festival favorite examines the various forces burying a family in isolated 1950’s Colorado like so much mounting snow.

Adapted from the short story by Irish writer Colm Tóibín, Haigh’s tale follows a sensitive son (The White Lotus’ Fred Hechinger) as he warily observes the growing distance between his taciturn father (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) and alcoholic mother (Caitriona Balfe), whose long-ago choice to bind her life to the family’s frigid rural existence culminates in her sudden disappearance one dangerously snowy night. As the son tries to puzzle out the mystery, his secret attraction to a young local (Reservation Dogs‘ D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai) only adds to the tension.

Also starring future Cyclops Kit Connor and Martin Freeman, A Long Winter comes to American screens on January 22.
