It’s been a big week for Evanescence. On Sunday, lead singer Amy Lee experienced “100% the strangest licensing we’ve ever had as far as ‘Bring Me To Life’ being used for something,” per Stereogum. That was, of course, Nathan Fielder’s suggestion in The Rehearsal that Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger—the pilot who successfully landed a plane in the Hudson River and got a Tom Hanks biopic for his efforts—listened to the song’s chorus in its entirety before pulling off the stunt. (The A.V. Club recapper Tara Bennett gets into it more here, but Fielder actually kind of sells the crazy hypothesis.)
Now, Lee is back with a new emo banger featuring Halsey for the From The World Of John Wick: Ballerina soundtrack. The song, “Hand That Feeds” is right in both artists’ wheelhouse; it’s a big ballad that could just as easily fill a large stadium (or, since this is a John Wick movie we’re talking about, more likely a dark, pulsing nightclub) as it could a sweaty basement emo night. Put another way, it’s exactly the type of song that could back a flamethrower-fire hose duel, which just so happens to be a scene from the upcoming film. Halsey and Lee also produced and co-wrote the song with former Bring Me The Horizon keyboardist Jordan Fish, so the track gets its emo bona fides from multiple sources.
