HBO teams with A24 and Ben Stiller in Born To Bowl trailer

The new documentary series goes behind the lanes of professional bowling to ask "Who do you think you are? (I am!)"

If there’s one quote you know from a professional bowler, there’s a good chance it’s: “Who do you think you are? I am!” This was yelled by Peter Weber, and it also serves as an introduction into the world of pro-bowling in Born To Bowl, the new HBO docuseries produced by A24 and Ben Stiller and narrated by Liev Schreiber. The first trailer for the docuseries doesn’t even make Weber—who is not a focus athlete in the series—seem all that quirky within the world of pro-bowling. We quickly meet one man who travels with his own mini-fridge, and another who refers to himself as the “Bob Ross of bowling.”

An official synopsis for Born To Bowl reads:

Set within bowling’s blue-collar culture, the series examines a familiar American family pastime that evokes myriad pop cultural references and reveals a quirky sport with ancient roots shaped as much by personality and persistence as by skill and precision. Every season, members of the PBA Tour travel from tournament to tournament with their balls in tow, fighting for victories from Akron to Reno, often needing to share budget hotel rooms along the way. At different stages of their careers, each man balances their ambition and love of the sport with the uncertainty of a profession built on week-to-week performance and earnings that often require them to take day jobs to make a living.

The first episode of Born To Bowl premieres on HBO on Monday, March 16 at 9 pm. The next four half-hour episodes roll out weekly through April 13.
