Where would Hollywood be without the comic mystery ensemble? This year is chock full of ’em, with The Residence, Poker Face, Knives Out: Wake Up Dead Man, and of course the much beloved Only Murders In The Building. The fifth season of the series has already entered production, and though much has been kept under wraps, more info about this installment’s ensemble cast is trickling through. The latest: Christoph Waltz has entered the building, per Variety.
Waltz joins series stars Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez for the new season, in addition to recently announced Keegan Michael Key. The new season will also feature Téa Leoni, who was introduced in the fourth season finale as Sofia Caccimelio. Sofia sought out our heroes to investigate the death of her husband, who had connections to organized crime. Series co-creator described Leoni’s character as a “great tease” for what’s to come: “She’s an extension of the little news report in Episode 9 that Mabel makes note of at the hospital. [Sofia] is the wife of the Dry Cleaning King of Brooklyn, and maybe a couple of dry cleaning outlets in Manhattan, as well, we may come to know,” he told Deadline. “But beyond that, it’s a world opened up potentially that we haven’t talked about too much yet in New York, so she holds a lot of intrigue.”
It’s pretty easy to picture Christoph Waltz having something to do with New York’s criminal underworld. He’s made a career out of playing extremely menacing villains. But maybe he’s coming to Only Murders to play against type—he’s definitely got some comedy skills in his repertoire. Regardless, between him and Meryl Streep, the Arconia is positively bursting with Oscar-winning gravitas lately!
