Cynthia Erivo to play Tupac Shakur's mother in Snoop Dogg biopic

Cynthia Erivo is bidding farewell to Oz and rolling up to California. The actor will star as Afeni Shakur, Tupac Shakur’s mother, in Universal Pictures’ upcoming Snoop Dogg biopic, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Outer Banks star Jonathan Daviss will portray Snoop, while Panic actor Camron Jones will play Tupac. In real life, the two musicians were label mates at Death Row Records and collaborated on tracks like “2 Of Amerikaz Most Wanted” and “Wanted Dead Or Alive.” The Snoop film will be directed by Craig Brewer, who has some experience with music biopics, having recently directed Song Sung Blue. Brewer reportedly wrote the latest draft of the script, taking over from Joe Robert Cole, who originally penned the screenplay. Details about the film’s storyline, including how much of Snoop’s life and career it will cover, have yet to be revealed. Will it explore his entrepreneurship and business empire, or his friendship with Martha Stewart? Who knows. Naturally, though, the film will include music from the rapper’s extensive catalog. Snoop and Death Row Pictures president Sara Ramaker are also on board as producers. According to Variety, the biopic is described as the “definitive biopic of the entertainment mogul and icon.”

Afeni, who died in 2016, was an outspoken member of the Black Panther Party whose activism motivated her famous son. “My mother taught me to analyze society and not be quiet if there’s something on my mind speak it, because my mother was a Black Panther, and she was really involved in the movement,” a teenage Tupac said in an interview featured in the 2023 docuseries Dear Mama, per ABC News. Their relationship also inspired Tupac’s 1995 hit “Dear Mama,” in which he reflected on their complicated bond and experience growing up in poverty. In a 1995 interview with the Los Angeles Times, the rapper said that he wrote the song for his mom “because I love her and I felt I owed her something deep.”
