David Krumholtz's indefinite break from acting definitely over

David Krumholtz’s hiatus from acting didn’t last long. After the Oppenheimer actor posted on Threads in August of this year that he would be putting his long and prolific acting career “on hold” for an indefinite period, Variety announced on Wednesday that he’s joined the cast of a new true crime limited series from The Guest producer Matthew Barry. The Trial Of Louise Woodward, about the 1997 trial of a British au pair for a baby’s shaking death, will see Krumholtz returning to acting as criminal defense attorney Harvey Silverglate. He’ll star alongside Catriona Chandler, Joanne Froggatt, Chloë Sevigny, and Hugh Laurie in the series.

In his quickly deleted post, Krumholtz, clearly venting on a lifetime’s worth of show business frustrations, explained that he had become “Frustrated, fed up, fried,” and that the grind of auditioning for parts, the growing gulf between studios’ profits and actors’ pay, and shrinking respect for actors in the industry had led to the decision. “Exploitative art isn’t art,” Krumholtz wrote, “And artists deserve a fair pay percentage for work that assists their employers in making profits.” Krumholtz also noted, “But with conglomerate corporatizing of Hollywood, those unwritten rules of mutual respect have shifted,” a statement that can only seem prophetic considering the recent, controversial Paramount-Warner Bros. merger.

Krumholtz, who has been in the business for over 30 years at this point, certainly had earned a break, especially considering the actor’s history of health issues. In 2011, he was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, and while Krumholtz was pronounced cancer-free a year later, the disease and treatment caused notable changes in his weight and appearance. In 2024, the actor was diagnosed with rare and debilitating marijuana-related cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome, which, he says, caused him to nearly die several times.

Krumholtz most recently appeared as Kara’s father Zor-El in this summer’s Supergirl, and can also be seen in the real-life football drama Mr. Irrelevant alongside Superman‘s David Corenswet.
