Set in 1991, season one of Dexter: Original Sin presented an origin story for the infamous killer. Patrick Gibson plays the titular character, while Christian Slater steps in as his father Harry and original Dexter actor Michael C. Hall joins as the narrator.
In a season one interview with ScreenRant, Phillips elaborated on his motivation for telling this story. “When we first see Dexter in the OG series, he’s 35 years old and fully developed as a serial killer. Right? Now we meet him in Original Sin, he’s 20 years old, he’s a college student, he’s socially awkward, he’s never kissed a girl, he doesn’t know how to hug his own sister,” he said. “He’s got to learn how to blend in and be part of the world. Yet he is fated to be a serial killer. And that’s the inevitable part of his journey that the audience is familiar with, and they get to see that baby grow up.”
Fans will also get to watch that baby come back to life in Dexter: Resurrection, which will see Hall reprise his iconic role following the events of Dexter: New Blood this summer. Dexter may kill a lot of people, but the Dexter-verse will never die.
