Ennio Morricone will score Terrence Malick’s Voyage Of Time
Probably because he was in a good mood after working in his wheelhouse on Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight, legendary composer Ennio Morricone has agreed to reunite with former irritant Terrence Malick on the forthcoming documentary Voyage Of Time.
According to the production company Wild Bunch, Morricone will provide original music for the documentary, which has been billed as “celebration of the universe, displaying the whole of time, from its start to its final collapse.” The documentary will be released in a 40-minute IMAX cut narrated by Tree Of Life star Brad Pitt as well as a separate, 35mm, feature-length version narrated by Malick’s Knight Of Cups star Cate Blanchett. At this point, it’s uncler whether Morricone will provide a distinct score for each version.
Morricone worked with Malick previously on Days Of Heaven, but the composer has described their working relationship on that film as fraught. In the documentary Rosy-Fingered Dawn, Morricone said, “[Malick] didn’t know me very well, so he made suggestions, and in some cases, gave musical solutions. This kind of annoyed me because he’d say: ‘This thing . . . try it with three flutes.’ Something impossible! So, to humor him, I would do it with three flutes and then he’d decide to use my version after all.” Let’s hope Malick has softened after all his years of existential yearning.
