Erik Selvig
Who he is: Dr. Erik Selvig
His power: No powers to speak of, just a brilliant and eccentric scientist.
His story: Erik Selvig first appears in Thor, overseeing Jane Foster’s research in New Mexico, though he’s suspicious of Thor upon the Asgardian’s arrival, and warns him off staying with Jane. However, he’s soon caught up in the events, and agrees to help S.H.I.E.L.D. research the Tesseract—though he’s controlled by Loki during this conversation. In The Avengers Loki uses the scepter to brainwash him, and Selvig helps Loki to develop the plan to use the Tesseract to open the portal in New York, allowing the Chitauri army through. However, after Black Widow knocks him out, he comes to his senses and helps her shut the portal. He’s next seen in Thor: The Dark World, where the effects of being controlled by Loki seem to have made him unstable, and he’s arrested for running nude around Stonehenge. But he’s freed by Darcy Lewis and her intern Ian, and joins Jane and Thor to help defeat Malekith and the Dark Elves. He returns to academia, and when Thor calls on him during the events of Avengers: Age Of Ultron, the scientist accompanies Thor to a mystical pool, where Thor has unsettling visions. By film’s end, Selvig is working at the Avengers’ new facility in upstate New York.
