If you were wondering, in the second season, how much Netflix’s FUBAR is still resting on its “Arnold Schwarzenegger action star” laurels, look no further than the new FUBAR trailer. In it, Schwarzenegger’s head pops out of a tank, which is surrounded by soldiers. Smoking a cigar, he says, “I told you. I’m back.” That’s FUBAR in a nutshell: mid-budget slapstick nostalgia, returning to your screens on June 12.
But listen, Carrie-Ann Moss in villain attire, outright declaring she’s going to “destroy the world” in a comical German accent has gotta do it for somebody. It certainly does it for Luke Brunner (Schwarzenegger), who spends the trailer tangoing with the sexy terrorist from his past. Luckily, she brings along another sexy terrorist (Guy Burnet) to tango with Luke’s daughter Emma (Monica Barbaro). Like, both couples have literal, highly suggestive dance sequences in the trailer. No one can accuse this show of being subtle. (FUBAR itself is an acronym for “Fucked up beyond all recognition,” so subtle was really never in the cards.)
If the FUBAR trailer is one part spy vs. spy romance thriller, the other part is wacky found family comedy (with members including Fortune Feimster, Tom Arnold, Milan Carter, and Jay Baruchel, to name a few). The antics are dialed up even further this season as the team is all living under one roof while participating in the witness protection program. This inevitably leads to some comically “awkward” scenarios, but don’t forget that “we’re going to go in knowing there might be a rat in the kitchen,” as creator Nick Santora put it to Tudum. So sure, there’ll be laughs, but there’s also going to be a reckoning—just hopefully not a world-destroying reckoning. Otherwise, how would the show come back for a third season to cram in more Schwarzenegger movie references?
