Great Job, Internet: Get your ugly-cute fill with this horror-comedy short from British comedian Harry Hill

The blending of comedy and horror can be a tricky thing. (If you’d like a much more detailed, and thoughtful, dissection of those difficulties, may we direct you to this new essay from A.V. Club TV Editor Erik Adams?) But one quick avenue to discovering that intersection can come from making something that is both very ugly and, at least hypothetically, cute—something that recently posted horror-omedy short “The Jillon” proves from about the second its title character shows up on screen.

Posted online two days ago by its writer, Harry Hill—a veteran British comedy writer with a bold and subversive taste for the absurd—the short was directed by Arthur Studholme, and features performances from Flip Webster and Richard Syms as an elderly couple who want a baby, with Richard Ayoade as the narrator/person a lot of the people watching the short have probably at least actually heard of. But what it mostly features is The Jillon, which you can see in the above header image, unless we chickened out out of putting it front-and-center on our web site, and which is kind of what a baby would look like if it was designed by someone who doesn’t like babies very much.

With a surprisingly slow-burn beginning, the short is sweeter than it is horrific—but not, y’know, entirely. If nothing else, it’s a pleasantly unsettling way to spend 15 minutes on a Halloween afternoon while you’re waiting for the candy-hungry hordes to show up, and might even impart a few nice lessons about parenthood, and the terrible things that can happen to those who seek it, in the process.
