Berlanti says his film has “no connective tissue to those worlds,” referring to stuff like Batman V Superman and Suicide Squad, adding that “it’d be a separate thing.” This is especially notable given the fact that Booster Gold—a dude from the future who goes back in time so he can become a famous hero—is easily one of the wackier characters in DC’s collection. Given the oft-derided grimness of DC’s fledgling movie universe, a goofball like Booster Gold would’ve been an interesting addition. Now, though, we’ve got a movie based on an established superhero that isn’t going to be part of the traditional “cinematic universe” model, which is unheard of in 2016.
As for the Booster Gold movie itself, Berlanti says the idea came from a long-dead TV project that he and longtime producing partner Andrew Kreisberg had been developing. DC Entertainment’s Geoff Johns apparently approached them about producing a movie, and they decided to resurrect the project with writer Zack Stentz, who has worked on The Flash and X-Men: First Class.
