Introducing Endless Mode: A New Games & Anime Site from Paste
Asking actors for Marvel casting spoilers is one of those classic examples of a question where getting a lie or a truth in response is going to look exactly the same, so why even bother asking? And yet, we can’t help but detect a certain degree of world weary honesty in the way Halle Berry recently fielded a question about when we’re going to see her name on one of those Avengers: Doomsday chairs Marvel spent five hours showing off recently, which is to say, never. “Not gonna be there,” she told Black Girl Nerds while doing CinemaCon promo for her new film Crime 101, after tossing out a brief, joking “Keep waiting!” Then, a pause. Then, a slightly more tired, “Not gonna be there.”
Although Oscar winner Berry was, arguably, the biggest name on the cast list when the first X-Men came out back in 2000, she’s had a modestly contentious experience with the franchise over the years. (Her later Kingsman: The Golden Circle director Matthew Vaughn once told a story about leaving production on X-Men: The Last Stand because producers were trying to lure Berry back with a fake script that would have put more emphasis on her Storm; Berry ended up doing the movie, but was largely disconnected from the franchise afterward, appearing again only in 2014’s X-Men: Days Of Future Past.) She has, previously, expressed at least some interest in taking back up the role of beloved weather witch Ororo Munroe—she apparently told Blake Lively she’d be game to show up in 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine, but was never approached by Ryan Reynolds about it—but it doesn’t sound like she’s currently MCU-bound.
The reveal that various X-Men actors would appear in Doomsday—including James Marsden, who hasn’t showed up for one of these movies since The Last Stand—combined with Marvel coyly insisting there were even more names to come, has had fans hoping we might get Berry’s Storm back in some way. But while we always hold our hearts open to the possibility of being tricked—Oscar-winning performer, and all—Berry sounded pretty convincing when she shot down the idea of getting her own fancy chair.
