Hannah Einbinder "grateful" for Mark Ruffalo's comments about Paramount's ties to Israel

Hacks’ star Hannah Einbinder isn’t known for staying quiet on a host of issues, whether it be football, immigration, or Gaza. She set the record straight in one fell swoop when she won an Emmy last year, declaring, “Go birds, fuck ICE, and free Palestine!” So it should come as no surprise that the Camp Miasma star would back fellow Palestinian advocate Mark Ruffalo up after Paramount labeled his comments about the studio’s ties to the Israeli military “antisemitic.” Not taking kindly to the continued conflation of the religion and cultural heritage of Judaism with support for the warring nation-state of Israel, Einbinder, who is Jewish, posted a response on Instagram Stories expressing gratitude toward Ruffalo, writing that by “equat[ing] criticism of Israel, its genocide, or anyone who supports it to antisemitism, they rob the word of all its meaning.”  Einbinder writes:

I’m so grateful that Mark Ruffalo drew a connection between the Ellisons providing military technology to Israel during a genocide and their unprecedented media takeover—and pointing out that this is a dangerous consolidation of power that could ultimately be used against us.

The idea that he only said these things because the Ellisons are Jewish is LUDICROUS. Is it also antisemitic to point out that Safra Catz, the Oracle executive vice chair who boasted about the ‘profoundly scary technology’ provided to the IDF, also sits on Paramount’s board? Or that Larry Ellison has been buying favor with Trump by donating tens of millions to his political efforts for years? Or that he once offered Netanyahu a lucrative Oracle post?

All of us artists could stand to be more like Mark, willing to speak out for oppressed people everywhere, even when powerful people try to bully us into silence. Visibility is a responsibility. Those of us with a platform need to use our voices before speaking out is outlawed altogether.

Last week, Ruffalo shared a video of Oracle executive and Paramount Skydance board member Safra Catz bragging about the “really profoundly scary technologies” the company provided Israel, which has killed more than 73,000 people, including more than 20,000 children, since invading Gaza in October 2023. Owned by Paramount CEO David Ellison’s father, Larry, Oracle is one of several entities funding Larry’s son’s big purchase. (Other investors include $10 billion from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.) The Hulk actor criticized Oracle and its connection to David Ellison’s Hollywood buying spree, writing, “These ‘really profoundly scary technologies’ will most likely be merged into one of the largest media conglomerates in the world and one day used on you. Look how she revels in what we now have come to see as a genocide, which was built on an apartheid system of oppression powered by Oracle. There is an old saying. ‘The way you do one thing is the way you do everything.'”

Ruffalo dismissed Paramount’s antisemitism charge as “appalling and fundamentally dishonest.” Einbinder, firmly in Ruffalo’s camp, clarified further, “This is criticism of RIGHT WING technofeudalist oligarchs who are in the process of carrying out the largest media acquisition in history.”
