Wash Westmoreland (Still Alice, Colette) will step in as a director with both Kit Connor and Joe Locke reprising their roles as Nick and Charlie, respectively. Connor, Locke, and Oseman will also executive produce. “I am completely overjoyed that we will get to tell the end of the Heartstopper story,” Oseman said in a statement. “I’m so grateful to everyone who has worked hard to make this possible and to the incredible fans of Heartstopper for your patience and passion. I cannot wait to bring this story to a magical conclusion.”
That conclusion will pick up right after the events of season three, which saw Nick and Charlie head over heels in love. “But with Nick preparing to leave for university and Charlie finding new independence at school, the reality of a long-distance relationship begins to weigh on them,” the film’s synopsis reads. “Doubts take hold, and their relationship faces its biggest challenge yet. Meanwhile, their friends are also navigating the ups and downs of love and friendship, confronting the bittersweet challenges of growing up and moving on. Can first loves really last forever?”
No release date has been set for the film as of this writing. It also hasn’t been officially announced whether or not members of the show’s supporting cast (including William Gao, Yasmin Finney, Tobie Donovan, Corinna Brown, Kizzy Edgell, and more) are set to return, but the emphasis on Nick and Charlie’s friends in the synopsis makes that a pretty safe bet. If this works, maybe more Netflix fans will be saved the pain of not seeing their favorite stories conclude in the future.
