Adam Scott squares off with googly-eyed menace in Hokum trailer

From Lumon to a remote Irish inn, Adam Scott can’t go anywhere without being trapped inside a hellscape informed by his own trauma.

Adam Scott squares off with googly-eyed menace in Hokum trailer

Adam Scott continues to be the avatar for interrogating the existential terror of humanity’s liminal spaces. On Severance, he fights the work-life imbalance of meaningless office work, and in the Hokum trailer, he visits his family’s old vacation retreat only to manifest his familial trauma in the form of mysterious, TV-dwelling monsters with bulbous eyes.

Hokum is the new horror movie from Damian McCarthy, who rode the buzz off his SXSW hit, Oddity, to Hollywood for an original new nightmare. Set in his home country of Ireland, Hokum stars Scott as Ohm Bauman, an author who heads to the remote Emerald Isle wilderness to spread his parents’ ashes. Unfortunately for him, TripAdvisor sent him to one of those hotels haunted by mysterious googly-eyed deer people. The official trailer plays up some of the film’s key elements, such as a mysterious honeymoon suite, a Barton Fink-esque bellboy, and the relentlessly creepy locals who keep warning poor Ohm to get the hell out of dodge. One of these days,  we’re going to get Adam Scott out of these metaphorical prisons.

Hokum opens on May 1.
