Riri Williams passes the first test in Ironheart trailer

In the first Ironheart trailer, Riri Williams is determined to be “iconic.” But being iconic sometimes requires doing “questionable” things, she’s advised by an inexplicably caped Anthony Ramos. (Okay, he’s playing a character called “The Hood,” so it is somewhat explicable, he just looks silly.) But are acts of heroism “questionable”? (Maybe; see Captain America: Civil War.) Do heroes ever have money-raining-down dance party montages? (Not really; that’s for fictional drug lords and the scammers in Hustlers.) It seems that Riri will have to choose between being iconic and being good.

“Set after the events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ironheart pits technology against magic when Riri—determined to make her mark on the world—returns to her hometown of Chicago,” the synopsis for the Disney+ Marvel series reads. “Her unique take on building iron suits is brilliant, but in pursuit of her ambitions, she finds herself wrapped up with the mysterious yet charming Parker Robbins aka ‘The Hood’ (Anthony Ramos).”

It seems pretty obvious from the jump—when Parker puts Riri to the test with a deadly trap—that it is he, not Alden Ehrenreich, who is shady. (Ehrenreich’s secret weapons bunker notwithstanding.) It’s so obvious that even Riri’s friend observes in the Ironheart trailer, “You’ve bitten off a hell of a lot more than you can chew.” But “I can chew a lot,” Riri insists, and in fairness, her iron suit looks pretty awesome.

Speaking of, the new series—produced by Black Panther director Ryan Coogler and helmed by head writer Chinaka Hodge—has the blessing of Marvel godfather and OG Iron Man Tony Stark. “Robert Downey Jr and I spoke just after we wrapped, and he shared some very lovely words about my journey,” Thorne recently told Empire magazine. “He told me how excited he was and that he’s rooting for it, too. I literally got two thumbs up. It’s really reassuring to know you’re not embarrassing Iron Man.” Ironheart premieres June 24 on Disney+.
