J&L Defer craft an eight-minute epic on “Johnny, Dream”
As members of Disco Doom, Anita Rufer and Gabriele De Mario are no strangers to writing punchy, fuzzy rock songs. But with their new project J& L Defer, Rufer and De Mario decided to stretch out a bit. The A.V. Club is premiering, ““Johnny, Dream,” an eight-minute epic from the band’s debut on Exploding In Sound Records, No Map. “Johnny, Dream” is No Map’s spacey centerpiece, seeing J&L Defer awash in synths and subtle guitar swells, creating a moody work that feels like a huge step for the Swiss duo. Though the song finds its basis in ambient music, De Mario’s vocals give the song a forward momentum, making it digestible without watering it down.
