Jeremy Allen White agrees with you that he'd make a pretty good Gene Wilder

Ever since someone first looked at the first episode of The Bear, saw its star’s curly hair, narrow features, and blue eyes that screamed to an uncaring universe that this man just needs some fucking sleep, people have been fan-casting Jeremy Allen White as beloved actor Gene Wilder. (Because while plans for a Wilder biopic are currently hanging out in the “in development” stage, the simple fact that he’s someone that a decent chunk of modern-day fortysomethings grew up seeing as a surrogate movie dad means the project is, apparently, inevitable.) You may now add to the list of people calling for Jeremy Allen White to play Gene Wilder one Jeremy Allen White, who took a break from his The Social Reckoning press duties this week to reveal that he’d absolutely be game to take a shot at the Willy Wonka star.

“It would be my honor,” White told Today this week, per Entertainment Weekly. Stating that he’d “absolutely” play Wilder if asked, White quickly rattled off some of his favorite roles: “Young Frankenstein is one of my earliest film memories. Blazing Saddles… he’s a genius. It would be an honor. He was a genius. Yeah, I love him. I’ve always loved him.”

Of course, in order for White to install Wilder in his rightful place alongside Bruce Springsteen and Rotta The Hutt in his swiftly growing filmography, he does need someone to actually ask him to do it. (Unless he just wants to spend a couple of days with his hat on the sidewalk outside Grauman’s Chinese Theater, although now we’re basically just doing Jimmy Fallon’s segment producers’ jobs for them.) As noted by EW, the film rights to Wilder’s life are currently held by A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints‘ Dino Montiel, who’s currently working on a script for a biopic project with Love, Victor writer Jeremy Roth.
