John Goodman to expand his fatherly repertoire into The Beast In Me season two

John Goodman will join Claire Danes in season two of The Beast In Me. According to Variety, the much-beloved actor, known for playing film and TV dads—including Fred Flintstone, Dr. Eli Gemstone, and Dan Connor, among other unforgettable pops—will flex his fatherly chops as Jack, the father of author Aggie Wiggs (Danes), though not necessarily in the warm, paternal way most of us prefer. Remember, Aggie’s previous memoir, written before she foiled the diabolical machinations of Nile Jarvis (Matthew Rhys) last season, discussed her fraught relationship with her criminal old man—so while plot details for the new series remain under wraps, don’t expect a cozy family reunion.

There was a time when the pretty darn good Netflix series was considered a one-and-done. The streamer campaigned The Beast In Me as a limited series for the 2026 Emmys, where it snagged a nomination for Outstanding Limited Series and won statuettes for Outstanding Lead Actor and Outstanding Music Composition For A Limited Or Anthology Series, which is pretty funny in retrospect. Not long after its Emmy wins (in fact, just ten days after), Netflix publicly announced its decision to do another Beast, why the heck not, with showrunner Howard Gordon saying in a statement, “We always told ourselves we’d only do a second season [if] we found a story that was worthy of the first—and I’m thrilled to say we found it.”

Gordon has at least been consistent about the possibility of making more Beasts, telling TV Insider in late 2025, “As long as Aggie is still roaming the planet and is a writer, I think there probably is a story there.” Gordon also said it would be “fun to explore” Aggie’s “grifter father, with whom she had a very complicated relationship and is clearly estranged.” “I was curious about who this guy might be,” he added, which makes us wonder whether his mind automatically defaulted to John Goodman for the role before plans for Beast 2 began, given how excellent he is at playing dads of all stripes, especially the complicated ones.
