Another day, another top director lining up to work with Josh O’Connor. Since Challengers in 2024, O’Connor has made a Knives Out, brought a Kelly Reichardt film to Cannes and is currently filming some secretive project with Steven Spielberg in the New York area. Apparently, that will be done by this summer, because O’Connor will be taking his talents to Scotland.
This is per Deadline, which reports today that O’Connor has signed onto Jack Of Spades, the next film from Joel Coen. There is precious little other information available about the project, but it will see Coen return to the Highlands after his solo directorial debut, The Tragedy Of Macbeth, in 2021. His brother Ethan has elected to go solo with the comedic “lesbian B-movie trilogy” consisting of Drive Away Dolls, Honey, Don’t! and an eventual third thing; we’ll have to see if Joel taps back into some of that off-beat humor or if he and O’Connor stick with the seriousness of his Shakespearean adaptation.
O’Connor seemingly teased the project at Cannes earlier this week, along with the Spielberg project, which seems to carry a near-Marvel level of secrecy. “I’m shooting this summer in Europe with an American director, more of which I can’t say,” the actor told Deadline. It also sounds like he could use a bit of a break. “But then I am going to go and do some other stuff for a little bit. I love my ceramics, I love gardening. My poor garden is suffering when I go away. And I’m definitely looking forward to some time to just try some other things and maybe get back on stage. It’s been too long.”
