Joss Whedon avows he isn't gonna stop being Joss Whedon
After a weekend that saw The Avengers triumph mightily over its bitterest rival The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel—and, as an added bonus, every other movie ever—you might expect that Joss Whedon is feeling pretty proud, and maybe also making self-deprecating quips about that pride laced with ironic pop-culture-referencing tangents. You would be right, and you can read them here at Whedonesque, where the director (whom no one will probably call "Josh" anymore, unless it's deliberately to be a dick) opens up about breaking all the box offices with his bare hands, and takes the time to thank those who made it possible besides the ones who gave him all the money. "People have told me that this matters, that my life is about to change. I am sure that is true," Whedon writes. "What doesn't change is that I've had the smartest, most loyal, most passionate, most articulate group of—I'm not even gonna say fans. I'm going with 'peeps'—that any cult oddity such as my bad self could have dreamt of."
In keeping with his insistence on calling himself a "cult oddity" after creating four fiercely beloved network television shows, directing two major motion pictures (including one of the top-grossing movies of all time), and generally being one of the most prolific and respected figures in modern media, Whedon jokes that the success of The Avengers will maybe finally get him recognized at Comic-Con, afford him a meal, and allow him to make the jai alai-themed "reboot of Air Bud that we all feel is so long overdue," and other pointedly humble and not-serious things. And of course, he also offers the requisite promise to stay true to his roots as just a fan like you (pledging his support to supposed rival The Dark Knight Rises, thanking Sam Raimi, Christopher Nolan, Jon Favreau, and James Gunn for inventing "the true superhero flick"), and promising that he's still got serious love for television and a plan to make Dr. Horrible 2 and Wastelanders. Anyway, you should read it. It's charming and self-effacing and funny and totally Joss Whedon, who is still that guy no matter what.
